This is a fine treatment for digestive disorders like ulcers and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, certain skin diseases like psoriasis, rashes, boils etc. Moderate and superior doses of snehapanam are found to be effective for urinary disorders, diabetes mellitus, gout and epilepsy.
Medicated ghee, eaten in empty stomach, for its first hand therapeutic value, is called snehapanam. The treatment involves the removal of hard-core toxins and wastes from the body. Snehapanam is one of the excellent preparatory methods before Panchakarma.
Before doing all these procedures one should understand patients condition like age,disease condition,season, digestive capacity etc. And also have some pre and post operative procedures before and after this Snehana therapy.
One day before the actual administration of snehapana(internally),the concerned individual should be given food in the moderate quantity.The food should be liquid, hot and non sticky that does not cause obstruction to the channel of circulation or srothas. The food should be hot and in liquid form, in proper quantity.One is advised to consume food slowly. Food should be taken calmly ,without talking or laughing while taking food,and also food is given which should be favorable and conductive to his body constitution. To prepare the Sneha panna medicine herbs such as indukantham ghritham, Gulgulu thikthakam ghritham, Sukumara ghritham, Ksheera bala tailam, Dhanwantaram tailam,etc are used . There are also different types of dosages depending on the kind of treatment and the health of the person .These are Pravara Matra-Sneha , Madhyama Matra, Avara Matra and Hrasiyasi Matra with arohana karma .The difference is in minutes in regards time taken for digestion. The therapist or the physician advices the kind of Sneha panna to be taken based on the various factors like state of agni, clinical condition,health of patient etc. Before assessing the dose of Sneha Dravya, Agnibala is assessed in the patient. The dosage is advised to take Sneha in the early morning based on the nature of the diseases,condition of the body,etc Om the first day, the dosage is between 50 to 75mlof ghritha and 30 to 50ml for Taila. The dose for the next day is generally fixed after assessing the time taken for digestion. Hot water boiled with piece of sundi or dry ginger, dry coriander seeds is given in small doses toenhance the digetion.The dosage is contined until the desired symptom or change is seen which is usually obtained within 3 to 7 days. The physicians observe the condition of the patient in accordance to the symptoms seen such as head ache, giddiness, Excess-salivation, Fainting, Fainting, feeling of tiredness even during rest, Thirsty feeling, burning sensations, Restlessness.All these symptoms indicate the progression of digestion in the patient .After few days different symptoms such as Laghuta, Proper passage of the flatus, Proper passage of the flatus, Proper thirst, Clear erection with out any taste, odor,etc.are seen in the patient which also indicates recovery from the disorders.In the end ,Abhyanga and Swedana therapy is followed .
