EpistaxisNose bleed, also known as an epistaxis, is the common occurrence of bleeding from the nose. It is usually noticed when the blood drains out through the nostrils. Haemorrhage or bleeding from the nose is called epistaxis. It is a sign of vitiated body heat and is often associated with high blood pressure and some other systemic diseases caused by excessive heat in the body. Many people suffer from epistaxis during the hot summer months. There are two types: anterior (the most common), and posterior (less common, more likely to require medical attention). Sometimes in more severe cases, the blood can come up the nasolacrimal duct and out from the eye. Fresh blood and clotted blood can also flow down into the stomach and cause nausea and vomiting
Factors such as excessive heat, intake of hot, spicy food and alcohol are the general causes of epistaxis. Local causes such as trauma on the nose, irritants in the air, inserting sharp object in the nose, blowing the nose very strongly can cause epistaxis. Diseases like sinusitis, rhinitis, hypertension, tumours in the nasal area, heart diseases, liver diseases, alcoholism, and malignancies such as leukaemia, deficiency of platelets, and Vitamin C and K can also cause epistaxis. There can be several causes for epistaxis, some of the common reasons include: Infectious diseases, Hypertension, Anemia, Alcohol, connective tissue disease, Hemophilia, Hematological malignancy, Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.Symptoms
From Ayurvedic perspective nasal bleeding indicates aggravation of pitta. Aggravated pitta mixes with rakta dhatu (blood tissue) to cause epistaxis. It can occur as an independent disease or as a symptom of diseases like urdhwaga raktapitta, kamala and so on. Ayurveda utilizes herbal preparations that contain haemostatic herbs for internal and external usage that help check bleeding. The flow of blood normally stops when the blood clots, which may be encouraged by direct pressure applied by pinching the soft fleshy part of the nose.
